Open for Christmas Day?

My parents and little sister have decided that since I cannot visit them for Christmas, that they will come to me! One problem... where to have Christmas dinner? Any suggestions for places open Christmas Day? I'm north but geography is unimportant, as long as there are vegetarian options.

I need suggestions for volunteering Christmas Eve and Day

I'm not working, I'm not with family. I was planning all my dog walking and fun having for Christmas Eve and Christmas Day until I saw an article in the Chronicle about helping the homeless.

I want to help families. I want to be where families are and I can help moms and dads feed their children this year.

Give me all your suggestions!

Open on Christmas

Hadn't seen this posed yet...

I've called most of the obvious places, everywhere seems to be closed. Anyone know of any Stores, even like HEB that will be open on Christmas day for any amount of time?

Zilker tree?

I know the festival is over, but do they keep the tree itself up till Christmas? Can you just go to the park and see it?

Sprint Not Working in Austin Area?

Is anyone else experiencing issues with Sprint not calling out or receiving calls?

The Husband and I have tried repeatedly to make calls (to each other, to friends and family in and out of Austin) and the calls hang up almost immediately after placing them.

Why all the lettering is getting smaller...

I'm flying out tonight to the UK. I'll hole up in the middle of nowhere with my children and ex-wife and my mother as well, and probably be off-the-internet the whole time. There will be no TV in the middle of nowhere, so I will miss Doctor Who and miss "Statuesque" on Sky1 (10 pm Christmas Day).

Then I fly from the UK to Boston in time for Amanda's New Year's Eve gig with the Boston Pops. It looks like an amazing evening, and "Statuesque" will get its American premiere on a big screen as one of the evening's many entertainments (here's the Boston Pops page listing all the stuff that'll be happening that night).

Trying to deal with the last things I have to do before I get out of here. (Also realised very late last night that the problems I've had reading comics for the next Year's Best American Comics that I'm guest editing has nothing to do with losing my love for comics and everything to do with the fact that somewhere in the last year I must have started needing reading glasses for small print and had not realised this. I found a pair of reading glasses and the world became one with good, easy-to-read comics in it once again... I suppose more things like this will happen as I age. How odd.)

I leave you with a handful of links...

Edgar Oliver was on the Moth bill with me a few years ago. This week's Moth podcast is The Secret Origin of Edgar Oliver. (http://www.themoth.org/podcast is the Moth's Podcast page. It's a fine thing to have on your podcast list: strange, true stories that arrive weekly into your world.)

A reminder that I'll be narrating a performance of Peter and the Wolf in New York on January the 16th. (Details at http://www.artsworldfinancialcenter.com/cgi-bin/Go.cgi?q_id=1004&q_category=1)

Okay. Back to last-minute things...

Teacher's Certifications - Opinions on Providers

Oh great and mighty community,

My husband has decided that he wants to become a middle school science teacher. We've already exhausted our Google fu looking for Austin area programs that cater to mid career change individuals. We have a list based both on Google and on recommendations from the AISD site.

However, there's a huge list and we're floundering a bit trying to find which program is the best. Here's where I need your help - any personal recommendations on programs to become a teacher in the Austin area?

He has all of the reqs that most certification programs ask for: Bachelor's degree, GPA, etc. He will be working full time while trying to obtain this certification so anything that has evening and weekends are important. Money and location isn't really an object as long as it's a good program for him. I really want this to be successful.

He doesn't really have a preference as far as school districts go and we don't have children so any insight, rumors or interesting tidbits regarding the different local districts would be much appreciated.

Computer Classes

I’m thinking about taking computer classes next year (web design, HTML/CSS, flash maybe). Wondering if anyone has any class recommendations or experience doing classes at ACC, Informal Classes… Obviously want to learn a lot but I’d be balancing this with a full time job and other side projects. Don’t want to feel totally overwhelmed or overloaded. I have considered just trying to teach myself online or buying a book but I don’t think I’m disciplined enough. I’d much rather just go to a class.

Breaking local news.. plz to fix. kthxbai: water outage near Braker & Lamar

I just got off the phone with Austin water via 311 - they said there was a water line break that was causing some flooding in houses, so they shut off service to part of my neighborhood. They had no estimated time when the water would be back on, however she recommended to give them 4-6 hours. If you live near Braker & Lamar, you might call your dog and see if she's got wet paws when she answere the phone.

More reason to drink beer.

Christmas Lights on 37th Street...

Edit:I missed the post about the lights before sorry about that!!

My parents are in town for Christmas and this is our first year staying in Austin for Christmas (instead of going to either of our families places) and we're all needing to get a little more in the holiday spirit :). Any ideas especially dog friendly ones would be GREATLY appreciated! My parents still haven't spent enough time here to really warm up to the city yet, i'm hoping we can change that :).

Cheers!

Edit#2 (sorry!)- Where in Austin would i be able to find a reasonably priced 12 inch cast iron skillet?!
